Don’t Wait for a Wake-Up Call: Why Most People Start Training Too Late
Most people know they should be active but wait until pain or a health scare forces them to start. Here’s how to take control of your health before you’re forced to and why strength training is the best place to begin.

When one of our longtime clients came in for his session last week, we got talking about what first brought him to Momentum. He’s been with us since the day we opened.
He told me something that stuck.
He said he’d always known he needed to be active and that being stronger and fitter would help his health, his confidence, and his energy. He even had anxiety about what would happen if he didn’t do something. But knowing wasn’t enough.
“I knew I had to exercise but I just wouldn't do it” he said.
That’s something I hear all the time and I think most people can relate. It’s not that we don’t care about our health. It’s that life gets busy, energy runs low, and the things that matter most often don’t feel urgent until they’re unavoidable.
For him, the turning point came when his doctor prescribed cholesterol medication. He said he felt too young to be on it. That was the moment he finally decided to do something about it.
Which brings me to something I've noticed in my 10+ years coaching:
Most people don’t start training because they want to.
They start because they have to.
The Cost of Waiting
A few months ago, another new client told me a similar story. She’d known for years that she needed to strength train. Her back would get stiff after long hours at her desk, and she’d “throw it out” every so often.
But she never made it a priority, until she herniated a disc.
That’s when it hit her. She wasn’t just losing strength. She was losing confidence in her body.
Now, she’s training consistently, rebuilding strength, mobility, and trust in her body again. And she keeps saying, “I just wish I started sooner.”
That’s the pattern I see over and over again:
We know what to do, but we wait until pain or fear pushes us to finally act.
Why It's So Hard to Start
It’s not a lack of intelligence or motivation. It’s human nature. Our brains are wired to prioritize short-term comfort over long-term reward. We convince ourselves that we’ll start when things slow down, when work settles, when the timing feels right.
But there’s rarely a perfect time and waiting usually costs more than we expect.
When you finally decide to act, it’s often because you’ve lost something first like strength, energy, or confidence in your own body.
From Anxiety to Empowerment
At Momentum, we see strength training as more than just a fitness goal. It’s about taking ownership of your health before you’re forced to.
When you train consistently, you’re not just building muscle, you’re building resilience. You’re teaching your body to handle whatever life throws at it. And you’re creating confidence that spills into every other part of your life.
You don’t need to wait for a wake-up call.
You don’t need to wait for the doctor to hand you a prescription, or for pain to remind you of what you’ve been avoiding.
You can start from a place of control, not crisis.
If you’ve been thinking about getting stronger, moving better, or finally doing the thing you’ve been putting off, this is your sign to start.
You don’t have to do it alone. That’s exactly what we’re here for.
